Pseudomyxoma Peritonei

What is PMP?

PMP is an abbreviation for Pseudomyxoma Peritonei. This rare syndrome of cancer has been described as "poorly understood" for a variety of reasons.

Generally originating from the appendix, the disease may be hidden for many years before symptoms become apparent.

Symptoms may include abdominal or pelvic pain, bloating, infertility, increased girth, protrusion of the navel, and changes in bowel function. However, some patients exhibit none of these symptoms.

Generally, surgery, often including chemotherapy, is the treatment of choice. Locating a skilled surgeon experienced in treating the disease is imperative. If left unchecked the disease may become more malignant and spread throughout the abdomen or peritoneal cavity.

An international listing of skilled SURGEONS and SPECIALISTS is located on the PMP Pals’ Network website at http://www.pmppals.org

Other cancers that may be described as “PMP” include:

Adenocarcinoma of Appendical Origin
Adenocarcinoid Goblet Cell Appendiceal Cancer
Goblet Cell Carcinoma
Mucinous Adenocarcinoma
Mucinous Carcinomatosis
Mucinous Cystadenoma
Mucinous Cystadenocarcinoma
Peritoneal Carcinomatosis Pseudomyxoma Peritonei
