Henri was our dear and much admired champion in the fight against Pseudomyxoma Peritonei.
Here is an excerpt from a eulogy prepared and presented by Henri's son, Erwin:
Dear Dad, I don’t like speeches at all, but you deserve one.
I couldn’t wish for a better father.
You were kind, interested, stubborn and always prepared to stick your head out for someone else.
Up until your last day, you were fully interested in your friends and family.
Because of this, you made it easy for us to visit and say goodbye.
Thank you for your unbelievable battle against your disease . Only you made it possible that we’ve been able to enjoy each other for thirteen more years after the announcement, long ago, that you had only three more months to live at most.
You have seen more than your share of hospitals from the inside. Therefore I’m glad that we were able to take care of you at home until the end. I want to thank everyone who helped us make this possible. Especially my mother and my aunt Hennie who tirelessly helped us for weeks and weeks despite of her own disease.
Thank you, you were great!
Dear dad, parting hurts terribly.
I will never forget you.
Erwin.

Prof. David Roy Hall, 1954-2011
It is with great sorrow that David's family announces his passing on Feb. 21, 2011, at home.
His wife, Susan Cardy, will miss her best friend and husband of twenty-five years. David brightened her life with humour and kindness. His son, Ian Hall, will miss his father's gentle guidance and loving support. No father could be more proud than David was.
David was the son of Murray Hall of Barrie and Gladys (Jo) Hall (née Helmkay) (deceased). Always remembered by his siblings: Doug (Anne) of Barrie; Susan Novosky (Murray) of Wasaga Beach; Steve (Susan) of Oakville; and Rob of Barrie. Uncle David to Andrew, Jane, Peter, Vanessa, Megan and Shannon. Loved as her own son by Dilys Dyer (Doug) of North Bay and brother by heart to Anna Lyn Baxter of Kingston and Jackie Cardy of North Bay.
David shared his too-short time on earth with us and we are the better for it. The pain we feel is a measure of how much we loved him. David has returned, too soon, to the place from whence he came before he was born. Peace is yours, David.

More than anything else, she was someone you were honored to be with, because she honored you. As her loving daughter-in-law said about her after her passing: “We won’t ever stop missing Mom because we’ll be always be telling people about her.”
One of Kathy’s mottoes – particularly as she fought two different forms of cancer in her short life – was “no regrets.” And she left this world in peace – with no regrets.

Jessie McAvoy

Jessie with her grandson
Jessie McAvoy was born Jessie La Corte on December 15, 1940 in Brooklyn, New York to Michael and Augustina La Corte. She is survived by one sister, Marie and her mother, Augustina. On September 8, 1962 she married Thomas Mc Avoy and they had three children, Thomas, Stephen, and Jennifer. She leaves behind 4 grandchildren, Ashley, Ryan, Mehgan, and Jacob. A passage from St. Paul's first Epistle to the Corinthians (Chapter 13 verses 4 to 8) talks about love and this passage is a perfect description of how Jessie approached life. St. Paul writes:
“Love is patient, is kind; love does not envy, is not pretentious, is not puffed up, is not ambitious, is not self-seeking, is not provoked; thinks no evil, does not rejoice over wickedness, but rejoices with the truth; bears with all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never fails, whereas prophecies will disappear, and tongues will cease, and knowledge will be destroyed.”
One could replace the word love with Jessie and the same verses would apply. Jessie was patient, was kind, was not pretentious, and was not self-seeking. Jessie showed great care and concern for her mother and patiently helped her in any way she could. Of all her considerable talents, Jessie's greatest one was her talent for giving. It is one thing to be generous with money or possessions, but Jessie was someone who gave of herself. Whether she was donating her time and skills to her church, historical societies, or other groups, she always found ways to help those who needed it. No one benefited more from this spirit of giving than her family. Her mission in life was to make everyone else's life a little bit easier. During her 63 years she assumed the roles of daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, friend, nursemaid, den mother, cheerleader, homemaker, chauffeur, seamstress, interior decorator, personal shopper, chef, gardener, professional councilor, and hostess extraordinaire. Remarkably, she accomplished all of these jobs without ever seeming rushed. Whether she was upholstering furniture, cooking ready-to-go meals, or caring for a sick relative, she always gave the impression that there wasn't anything else in the world needing her attention. Nor did she ask for anything in return. In fact, she would adamantly deny the impact her giving had on others by saying, "Oh, I just do the ordinary things." Jessie was a master at giving to others because she did it with love and humility.
Over the past year she bore much pain and she endured many disappointments all without complaining. Although she could not eat as her disease worsened, she constantly gave cooking suggestions to those who were staying for dinner. During these past few weeks, when the severity of her disease became apparent, Jessie allowed her family to come and sit with her. They remembered the great times they had as a family, and cried over what they would miss. Her unwavering faith in God helped them see that they would all get through this journey together. She healed them all emotionally, and held them up spiritually even as she was fading. This may have been her greatest gift of all.
Jessie's life was an example of joyous servitude to others. She gave from her heart, and taught us the true meaning of selflessness. It is now our task to apply that lesson in our daily lives. St. Paul concludes his discussion on love with the statement:
“So there abide faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love”
Jessie's life was truly one of love and concern for others.

Joan Miarecki 1946-2011
Joan Miarecki: December 24, 1946-July 13, 2011
Joan Miarecki was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. She began her career as a teacher, and spent many years teaching at St. Pius X in Stickney, Illinois. During her 15 years as a teacher, Joan focused on music and science. She developed a love of technology, and built the school’s first computer lab in the early 1980s.
Joan, front row, pictured with her son, Greg, and their friends, loved sailing!
Joan earned a master’s degree in information technology, and eventually left teaching to work full time in the IT field. After many years, she returned to teaching – this time at Bridge Elementary School on the northwest side of Chicago. She served as the school’s full time IT director for the remainder of her career.
When she was not working, Joan loved to sail on Lake Michigan. She pushed her family to buy a small boat! Over the years, as her son Greg grew, the size of her boat grew as well. For the past 30 years, she and her family sailed “Providence,” an Ericson 35-2. She raced in seven Chicago Yacht Club Races to Mackinac, and served as Providence’s director of shore support for 15 more. During the past 30 years, Providence has built one of the best racing records on Lake Michigan.
The photo above is a shot of Joan and her crew celebrating Providence’s finish in the 2003 Race. Joan also spent many years managing races on Lake Michigan – ensuring that all participants enjoyed themselves and raced safely.
Joan was diagnosed with metastatic appendiceal cancer in 2008. She fought bravely for more than three years, including two surgeries at UPMC. Her surgeries extended her life, allowing her to see her Greg complete his 25th Race to Mackinac in 2010. The support of her fellow PMP Pals meant a great deal to Joan, and was very much appreciated.
This memorial is sponsored with love, by Joan's son, Greg Miarecki.

He accomplished his goal of building his “cancer car,” a 1923 Dodge Hemi Roadster, in memory of his personal journey and those of his father, George Olson, and brother, Mike Olson. This project provided a positive outlet to help him cope with his illness. While building his hot rod, Mark developed supportive and lasting friendships with members of the Reedley Nomad’s Car Club.
Mark felt blessed to have these last several years to enjoy his family and to continue living life to its fullest. He is survived by his wife, Patti Shamoon Olson, daughters Alissa and Jocelyn; mother Patricia Olson; brother Greg and Janell Olson, and their children Paul, Josh and Daniel; sister Johanna Olson Alexander and Timothy Alexander; sister-in-law, Nancy Olson, and her children Nathanael, Jonathan, Priscilla, Timothy, Benjamin, Samuel, Suzanna, Josiah, and Zachariah; sister-in-law Sharon Shamoon and her children Stephanie and Adam; and nephew Charles Shamoon.

Joseph Pemberton

Joe and Gabriella
Joseph Pemberton,Jr May 13, 1952-November 21, 2009 age 57,
Joseph passed away at home in Blaine WA in the devoted care of his son, Ken.
Attorney Joseph T. Pemberton, Jr. passed away on November 21, at the end of a four and a half year battle with a very rare cancer, a battle he fought with the same dignity and determination he brought to his 27-year professional life.
Joe was a loving father, brother, uncle and had great pride in being a dad, and raising his son Ken. One of his greatest joys was sharing his love of the outdoors with his family, especially hiking in the north Cascades. He often spoke of finding “Heaven on Earth” and lived a very spiritual life. Joe always kept an open mind and enjoyed learning new things. He loved racing sailboats, skiing, fishing, hiking, cooking, listening to music, camping, and kayaking. In his last few years, he enjoyed spending his weekends at Granville Island and Stanley Park in Vancouver, BC.
Prior to entering law school, Joe helped treat emotionally disturbed children at facilities in Austin, TX and Berkeley, CA, while attending Antioch College (Ohio). After graduating from Antioch, Joe worked on NOAA ships in Alaska and Hawaii. After leaving the ships, he road a motorcycle down to El Salvador and back before entering law school.
Joe was a third generation attorney in Bellingham. His grandfather, William H. Pemberton had a private practice in Bellingham, before becoming a Superior Court Judge for Whatcom and San Juan Counties, and advanced all the way to the Washington State Supreme Court. Joe Pemberton, Sr. also had a private practice and was elected as the City Attorney for Bellingham, when it was a part-time job. Shortly after his father’s passing, Joe entered law school at Gonzaga in Spokane, where he attracted life-long friends including his law partner, Jim Hoogestraat, with whom he started the firm of Pemberton & Hoogestraat in 1982.
Joe’s legal career was marked by a concern for justice for the disadvantaged. In 1987, he started the Volunteer Lawyer Program (now “Law Advocates”) by picking up the phone and calling on his colleagues to provide free legal assistance to individuals without means to pay for an attorney. Many were willing to participate, but were skeptical of the rest of bar participating. After many calls, the program came to life and has now served over 20,000 clients. Joe was very proud of the local bar association for answering his call to assist the poor with legal representation. Due to the success of the program, Joe received the American Bar Association's Pro Bono Publico Award (1989), a national award. He was also one of the founders of the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center. He received the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force Human Rights Award in 2007, and this year, with other members of the team, the Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center's Peace Builder Award for Creative Conflict Resolution.
Joe was never afraid of a big opponent when it came to the law. He took on Lockheed Martin for a client and had to travel to London to depose a former Lockheed employee and to Greenville, SC to depose 10 other witnesses, which resulted in a favorable outcome.
During the Vietnam War draft, Joe was the first person in Whatcom County to receive Conscientious Objector status. Joe continued his peace activism throughout his life, organizing more than fifty local attorneys in a Lawyers March against the invasion of Iraq in March 2003, an event that received national attention in the New York Times and on Democracy Now.
Joe is survived by his son, Ken Pemberton, his sisters Diane Peirolo and Tanya Pemberton, his nieces Stephanie Davis, Karen Peirolo, and Meg Killian, his nephews Carl Todd and Michael Todd, and his grandnieces Emma Jagoe and Annie Peirolo-Hughes. We were privileged to have him in our lives and will miss his great sense of humor, his integrity, spirituality and love of life.
A public service will be held on December 14 at noon in the Jerns Funeral Chapel (Bellingham).
Donations may be made in Joe’s name to: Whatcom Peace & Justice Center, Law Advocates, or Whatcom Dispute Resolution Center.
Joe passed away due to complications from Mucinous Adenocarcinoma originating with appendix cancer.
Joe was a man of amazing dignity, especially during the most difficult of times; a very brave brother-in-arms to Gabriella and to all of his fellow cancer patients.

David Peterson 1972-2011
David L Peterson, 38, of Mentone, CA, passed away on 29 September after an 11 year battle with cancer. He was a Parole Agent for the State of California.
David was born in 1972 in Clovis, NM. As part of a military family, he had moved frequently around the US and Panama while growing up. He graduated from the Rome, New York, Free Academy in 1991 and moved to Southern California’s Inland Empire to attend Cal State University San Bernardino from 1991 to 1998, graduating with a degree in Criminal Justice.
During that time, he took a year off from CSUSB to become a member of the inaugural class of the AmeriCorps program, where he worked with the Forrest Service on various projects in the San Bernardino Mountains.
Because of David’s determination to be self-sufficient and pay for his college expenses, he worked part-time at Jack in the Box, U-Haul, SoCal Gas as a gas reader, and IESCO testing welds at refineries throughout his college years. After graduation, David volunteered to be an Associate Probation Officer for the County of San Bernardino in 1999. David was then accepted into the California Department of Corrections and attended the Corrections Officer Academy in late 1999. He subsequently was assigned to the Soledad Prison.
Due to his cancer diagnosis, he received a humanitarian transfer to the Chino prison. After four years, David became a Parole Agent working out of various offices in Southern California. David was selected to be a member of the Fugitive Apprehension Team in 2007.
Family, work, and public service were important aspects in David’s life. He enjoyed being with his five nieces and nephews; refereeing for their AYSO soccer teams, helping with homework, or just being there for them. He also joined the Masonic Lodge in Redlands. His other “family”, his coworkers and long-time friends, were an important part of his life, on and off the job. The friendship and brotherhood of those fellow officers contributed to his love of the job. These coworkers got him interested in his latest passion – motorcycling. He loved the freedom of riding.
David is survived by his parents, Lee and Sue Peterson of Mentone, his brother Richard and sister-in-law Elaine of Phoenix, sister Christine of Yucaipa, and five nieces and nephews.
David is remembered for his positive attitude, loyalty, perseverance, and even his determination (stubbornness!)

David was our fellow cancer warrior and member of the PMP Pals' Network for more than a decade.

Celebrate My Life (for Doris)
Celebrate my life…
When you remember my bright smile,
When you hear the laughter of my grandchildren,
When you recall our many happy days, our holidays, our family days,
When you remember how much I love you.
Celebrate my life…
When you marvel at a sunrise,
When you stop to watch a hummingbird,
When you smell the tender fragrance of sweet peas.
Celebrate my life…
When you extend yourself to others,
When you laugh in spite of life’s obstacles,
When you share your friendship with neighbor.
Celebrate my life…
When you tell a funny story,
When you spoil my puppy,
When you find a great bargain,
When you sew something special for someone special.
Celebrate my life…
When you scatter my ashes along the winding trails,
Knowing that I am free of pain, and at peace,
In the breeze, among the grassy hillsides,
Dotted with spring poppies and purple lupine.

Sandy was the beloved wife of Ray for 23 years, and was the loving mother of Eric, 21, Alan, 18, and Marlena, 11. She was a spirited volunteer, and immersed herself in causes that benefited her family. Sandy's friends described her as an inspiration, and a motivator for them to take up community service in their own lives. She loved her extended family of friends and neighbors. During holidays, the Woods' home was filled with relatives of all ages. Sandy's neighborhood friends rallied behind her with surgery.
Sandy enjoyed sports and was a good athlete. She played womens’ soccer with a community league for many years. Recently she enjoyed remodeling and repairing a "fixer upper" rental investment house, with her dear father.
Sandy was diagnosed with Mucinous Adenocarcinoma originating in the appendix, with Signet Ring Cells, four years ago. She relished every minute she had since her diagnosis. Although she inspired hundreds of acquaintances with her courage, she did not want to be remembered for her brave battle with cancer.
Sandy's husband, Ray, says, "I cherished my time with her. November 27 would have been our 23rd wedding anniversary."
This memorial tribute is sponsored by Sandy's longtime friend, Cheryl Simpson.
